Facilities Sauces, 2022
"Facilities Sauces" is a sound installation that transforms a communal kitchen at the Nida Art Colony in Lithuania using field recordings. The kitchen had been abandoned, with the electricity shut off due to lack of use. All that remained was a single green cooking pot, while the room itself was marked by scratches from its former life. In this emptiness, the kitchen became a resonant body, an opportunity to fill the space with sound.
I approached the narrow passageway between stoves, sinks, broken appliances, and missing cabinet doors as a canvas for sound. With many hidden corners, the space offered an opportunity to place field recordings that would resonate uniquely in each location. I aimed to compress the wide, open soundscape from the outdoors into the constrained, intimate environment of the kitchen.
Using a Zoom recorder, I captured the expansive soundscape of the Nida-Nudist beach and the rustling leaves from the "Dancing Forest." These sounds, rich in openness and movement, contrasted with the kitchen’s confined space. I installed four speakers in various corners: one under the sink, another inside a wall cabinet, a third beside the stoves, and the last inside the green pot, which could be heard only through a headphone. Each recording inhabited its own space, filling the kitchen with new life and interaction between sound and structure.
