쉼터치기 (Rest Area No. 5), 2023

"쉼터치기 (Rest Area No. 5)" is a walk through public space, conceived for the Juan 7-dong Green Village Rest Area, a park located in front of Space Dum Gallery in Incheon, South Korea.

What fascinates me about walking, particularly in public spaces, is the complex layering of live soundscapes that emerge from how and what we hear, influenced by our own movements. Sounds overlap, fade into one another, and shift in prominence. At certain moments, one sound may dominate, masking other layers of noise. In Juan 7-dong Green Village Rest Area, everyday sounds shift with each step: the chatter of neighbors, the hum of cars arriving, the clinking of bottles being carried to nearby restaurants, the wind blowing through distant alleys, and the rustle of someone picking up garbage bags around the corner.

This park brings together and dramatizes the moods and rhythms of its surroundings. With "쉼터치기 (Rest Area No. 5)," I wanted to actively engage in this sonic dramatization, participating through listening and walking as gestures of hearing, alongside other actions I introduced.

These gestures are encouraged to be followed by the audience at five different spots throughout the park. Maps and drawings indicating the location of each spot and the specific gesture to be performed were displayed inside Space Dum Gallery, where visitors could take them freely by hand. The gallery served as a gathering point, guiding participants to the public park to engage with the work in an intentional and embodied way.
