Daily routine of Brunnen

Neue Musik Zentrale, Essen, 2025

A circulating water system is built into the window recess of GNMR – Neue Musik Zentrale.

Brunnen is the third version of my ongoing series that brings field recordings from various water facilities into each exhibition site and reconfigures them in relation to each site’s spatiality.

In Brunnen, one can especially hear from the street the field recordings from a water treatment facility, where the city’s wastewater is pumped up from underground sewers by inlet pumps, with its carried debris being dispersed and purified before the lightened water is released back into the river. These recordings intertwine with the mechanical hum of the Brunnen installation’s pump motor on the window sill.

The visual hints of the display window, operated by the submersible pump, merge with the sounds of a lift station with screw-pump lift, a grit removal and grease separation stage, and a biological treatment tank.

Brunnen will run actively throughout November as part of Vindu at the Neue Musik Zentrale, with intermittent breaks in the pump operation.
